Episode 11: Robert Connavale Painting Found in Oceanside | Finding Hidden Masterpieces
From $140 Antique-Mall Find to Restored Artwork: Discovering Robert Connavale in Oceanside
What can be hiding on the wall of an antique marketplace? During our latest Finding Hidden Masterpieces art hunt in Oceanside, California, John Sumner visits Sea Hive Marketplace, where a $140 winter landscape catches his attention. The artist is Robert Connavale, a New York painter with an intriguing history—but the painting has problems. There are holes caused by stretcher creases, surface grime and other signs of age. Rather than walking away, John sees the potential beneath the damage and decides this forgotten painting deserves another chance.
Back in the studio, the treasure hunt becomes a painting restoration story. John cleans the artwork, stabilizes and repairs the damaged canvas, carefully matches the original colors, applies removable archival varnish and finishes the transformation with a new frame. Research into Connavale reveals another surprise: in addition to exhibiting his paintings in New York, he worked professionally as a scenic artist in animation, including work associated with Popeye and Little Lulu. The painting itself dates to 1946, during this period of Connavale's career.
So, did John's $140 gamble pay off? A remarkably similar Connavale painting—also an oil on canvas measuring 25 × 30 inches—sold at auction for $1,100 more than two decades ago. After considering the restoration, condition and comparable sale, John estimates the Oceanside discovery at approximately $1,500 at auction, $2,500 in a gallery and $3,000 for insurance purposes. It's a dramatic reminder of why we keep hunting: sometimes a damaged painting that others have passed by simply needs someone to recognize what is still there.
